Gangnam Style Music Video Analysis

"Gangnam Style" is a song which was sung by South-Korean singer "PSY". This song along with its music video became a worldwide phenomenon. It reached over 1 billion views and now to this day has now reached over 2.6 billion views which makes it the most viewed video on youtube ever, which is pretty amazing for a music video to achieve.

What the main thing was that grabbed the attention and publicity of people was the iconic Gangnam Style dance which PSY had created for his video. This dance is now known by everyone and is still used and practiced everywhere to this day. In terms of Goodwin's theory, this music video gave PSY the ability to now become very well-known for his dancing which he then carried on with in songs he created later on in his music career.

The mise-en-scene throughout this music video makes it unique by both the set and the costume changing in almost every scene. We see PSY wearing a black suit, casual clothes, swimming trunks and tennis gear amongst other outfits too. As seen in the image above various different camera shots/angles are also used. This one in particular is a long shot as several extras are shown to be participating in the dance along with PSY. There are also a lot of medium shots within the video of just PSY with his voice also being the main attraction along with the iconic dancing. What really surprised me with the success of this music video was the fact that the lyrics were not even english and were actually Korean, bar 2 words repeated in the chorus. This struck me as interesting because the popularity of the song was so high I questioned why when most of the audience could not actually understand it. This made me then realise that this song was nothing really without this standout music video which really stood out with the target audience by amusing everyone with its "wackiness".

I would also say that this music video is very unconventional because of all of the different settings used and "the dance" being the main focus rather than the singing. For example the medium close up shown above is not the sort of shot u would normally see within a music video due to the mise-en-scene of two nude men in a sauna with one singing and one then going on to dance. This is very unusual of a music video but showed that there was also a good narrative within it to make it so successful and amusing towards its viewers.
