Where is the Love? Music Video Analysis

This song was released in 2003 by "The Black Eyed Peas". Its about things such as racism and where all the love has gone from the world. It was received very well by the audience and is one of the Black Eyed Peas most successful songs to date.

In terms of mies-en-scene there is a prop used throughout the video which is symbolic to the lyrics. It is a red question mark within a white square on black paper. This fits in very well with the lyrics of "where is the love?" because it is indeed a question being asked to the world and to the audience. I noticed that this then follows on in the video with the chorus constantly repeating the phrase "where is the love?" An image of this question mark prop then follows in the form of paper on a bottle, stamped on money, a drawing and even a tattoo of it, clearly closing each time the chorus is said with a closing question mark to ask the audience a question. The question of the chorus is also sung and continuously repeated several times by a large group of children and therefore connecting with not just the adult audience but also a younger target audience.

The outfits that are shown to be worn within the video also suggest that this question is being asked to the whole world including all different classes of society. This is indicated by the individual and unique outfits which each person is wearing. The main question of "where is the love?" is asking in context to ethnicity, gender and age. All three of these are therefore present within the video all asking the question.

I believe that this music video has a great narrative which sends out a very strong message to its audience. It does this well by also including rhyming lyrics which mention the CIA. As an American group with dominantly an American primary audience, the CIA is obviously very well-known and therefore the rhyming lyrics help to link the American side of the song, even though that is where it is set.

2016 Remake

In 2016, whilst I was researching my various music videos including this one. The black Eyed Peas re-released this song featuring The World. The release of the song again was not actually a full on music video like the first one was but instead it was a series of images and guest appearances form stars such as Justin Timberlake, Snoop Dog and also Fergie who had previously left the group. The whole video was filmed in black and white with the only colour being the prominent and iconic red question mark inside a white square on black card. The images which are used within this video include images of Syrian refugees, Eu migrants and Islamic State militants in Syria. These are all current issues and situation occurring within the world right now which obviously prompted the Black Eyed peas to make a remake of the song which was released 13 years ago.
