Controversial Music Videos

Madonna- Like a Prayer

Madonna is a very well-known and popular artist. She is referred to as the Queen of Pop. It was not normally like her to make controversial videos like this however she did.

Madonna is seen multiple times within this music video to be dancing in front of burning crosses. This is obviously very controversial because of the huge disrespect that it shows to certain religions.

Another very controversial point within this video is where the Saint Martin de Porres comes to life and kisses Madonna. This on its own suggests disrespect however it then becomes increasingly more graphic as they then go on to make love on the alter within the church. This was all deemed wholly unacceptable by the Vatican and therefore it probably put many people off actually purchasing this song or viewing this music video.
However, it could also be argued that because of the censored scenes within the video it may have led more people to actually go and view the video. For example, I had never watched it before and I would not have watched it if I knew that it wasn't controversial.

Pepsi teamed up with Madonna in their advertisement campaigns as Coca-Cola had teamed up with George Michael, which meant in return that she was sponsored by Pepsi for her concert. The advertisement was only used twice in the US because of the negative representations that were associated with it.

Eminem- Just Lose It

The beginning of this video opens up with Eminem dressed as an iconic character which is the King of Pop, Michael Jackson. His iconic sparkling jackets and hat covering his face is visibly seen. The video then goes on to make constant references to Michael Jackson such as comments of touching kids and little boys. His name is then clearly mentioned in accordance to these things. Reference is also clearly made to Michael Jackson's change in physical appearance through the use of 2 different characters within the music video. The other actor is then seen to catch fire which relates to when Michael Jackson was filming a Pepsi commercial and his hair was seen to catch fire. Once again this is a direct representation of MJ. In a TV interview he was asked about his thoughts on this video and how Eminem had impersonated him. His response was "I am very angry at Eminem's depiction of me in his video," Jackson said in the interview. "I feel that it is outrageous and disrespectful. It is one thing to spoof, but it is another to be demeaning and insensitive." This video was released during the time of Michael Jackson's child molesting trial was occurring, and therefore the song was deemed quite inappropriate at this time. Another controversial moment was when Eminem is dressed up as Michael Jackson  and his nose appears to fall off and is shown to be kicked around the floor, connoting disrespect towards Michael Jackson. This relates directly to his plastic surgery that he was having at the time of the video being made.
